Suspect in Gladys Drive shooting charged with attempted murder

LAS CRUCES - The 69-year-old Las Cruces man suspected in Thursday evening’s shooting that resulted in the hospitalization of a plumber and a two-hour standoff on Gladys Drive has been charged with attempted murder, according to the Las Cruces Police Department.

John T. Haynie, of the 1600 block of Gladys Drive, is charged with one count of attempted murder, a second-degree felony.

Shortly after 6 p.m. Thursday, police officers were dispatched to the 1600 block of Gladys Drive, where a 54-year-old man was suffering from a gunshot wound to his abdomen. First responders tended to the man’s injuries before he was transported to University Medical Center in El Paso, police said.

On Friday, the victim, whose name has not been released, remained hospitalized in El Paso. His injuries do not appear to be life-threatening, according to police.

Police said the victim, who is a plumber for Roto-Rooter, was at Haynie's apartment working on a sink when Haynie allegedly shot him. A motive has not been established. The victim left the apartment and called 911 while attempting to drive away. Officers located the man in his Roto-Rooter van near the intersection of Gladys Drive and Missouri Avenue.

At the apartment, officers attempted to make contact with Haynie, who was inside and believed to be armed. Shortly after 8 p.m., LCPD's SWAT and Hostage Negotiation teams had successfully made contact with Haynie.

He was taken into custody and transported to Memorial Medical Center for observation, police said. Investigators believe Haynie was intoxicated at the time of the shooting, and officers found a 0.22-caliber revolver in his apartment.

Haynie was later booked into the Doña Ana County Detention Center, where he is initially being held without bond.
